Memory interference

Where one thing affects another. Schools are famous for this. Exam takers hate it! For example, teaching mitosis and meiosis together: You will mix them up. Rather, the optimal way is to separate one from the other. There are many examples like this.

Remedy

You can take a break. Unfortunately, this is impossible in school! The loop of work is enforced. The better way may be to come up with a mnemonic, for instance, "MiTosis is IdenTical cells!" Be clever and creative with this one! However, on rare occasions, brute force would have to do.

A more realistic approach may be to stop "automating" (heuristics), and think carefully, though overthinking can have its consequences, so decide on your own method!
