Fear of being a
fraud despite being a high achiever, or when family members or friends
are very different from the person. Alternatively, it can happen in
high-pressure places like the education system. Leads to
self-doubt and stress. It has the sense of fooling everyone, like a
fraud. However, I see it as fake. I see it as the Dunning-Kruger effect and a societal
bias that the
successful should not "show off" to "intimidate" those still working
hard to achieve.
If there is even the slightest sense of punishment or looking foolish,
or where there is a fear of not living up to what the self really is,
for instance, when getting asked one question about their expertise and
may get it wrong, even though it's a very small sample size, isn't it
natural that this term can exist?
Rather than being so much above your group, which may seem like a threat
to social conformity, they act "normal", though I personally have not
experienced being kicked out of a group for being "too good". Rather,
basic things may not entertain you anymore, leading to you feeling weird
which paradoxically can bring about more stress despite high
ability, which is the exact essence of this syndrome.
