Metacognition

Recognising and understanding how the self thinks.
It sounds scary, but that’s literally one of the biggest components of psychology (in fact if we can’t do this, psychology would literally not exist)
In fact, cognition is basic, assumed, and occurs all the time. Yet it is not until mature years that humans have the bravery or capacity to understand their own brains to the point where they can put their theories into words.
In fact, this is why even though understanding the self is hard, understanding others is nearly impossible without prolonged conversation (and still you cannot know anything about their brains!)

There is also another layer...

Metametacognition

Thinking about how I think about the awareness, understanding, and control of one's own cognitive processes

I need this to make differences and point out self-flaws to improve my philosophical and pragmatic processes in daily life.

Still confused?

Cognition = just thinking

Metacognition: how I think

Metametacognition: Think about how I think otherwise, I won’t even understand memory hacks

Metacognitive Monitoring

Tracking down errors such that awareness of errors exists and that it is the first step to their elimination. If you know why an error occurred, it's less likely that it will occur again (especially with spaced practice). A pretty good metalearning method! Sadly, I neglected this in IGCSEs and only started at GCE AS Levels to do that. However, tracking errors was one of the brightest things I did of all time!

Metacognition blackbox

You cannot really understand how you think. Maybe determinism exists, but then you blame yourself instead of the factors..

A bigger effect is the fundamental attribution error. You think others' thinking is stupid because you don't know their different brains, so naturally you hate them! This is so fundamental to psychology in that you will have no way to know others' brains, and in a game of limited information you will always judge by actions and words, not thoughts. As such it is indeed a total black box, even more than your thinking.
