Culture that overly glorifies work and shames people for doing other stuff. The problem is that it implies ANY activities not directly essential to study, work, or survival is "a waste of time", and that the people who want to waste time are trash at time management. The problem is that humans need to have fun or rest too...
Now schools try to encourage people to study so hard... This does have pragmatic value but only superficially in grades, which help with universities and jobs. The consequences are not good, though...
When phrases like not wasting time, live like last day, or life is short become common. The problem is a false sense of urgency and time, where society associates with little "productivity" is devalued (affects the internals!). Maybe tech caught up, but humans still want life. After the means of life (money) ofc want to live how they want to too.
Then the student goes: Why do I want to rest when I am working, and
work when I am resting?
The student is fed up, yet forced to work to the point it is a beast in
his life. As such, even when he is not working, he is stressed about things like studying
and grades, which may even be in his sleep. This is very bad! We should free people from hustle
culture stress
and toxic mindsets!
The escalation is that insufficient rest can impact productivity too - unless you measure how much
you work by the length, which is a total fallacy.
And with automation and AI,
even humans might feel like their manual labor is not that high-value
(even though it is a slightly unfair comparison, humans love to be
valued), so humans might feel like they have to work more or
longer - which might be the origin of it!
I am not a worker, but I observe this in school too - where working, even to the point of overworking, becomes the meaning of life itself. The Greeks said that we need both the means to live (money) but also the life itself. Hopefully the downfall of work inflation can come on a macro scale.
The whole point older gens use about Gen Z is that they are lazy - using the exact contradictory of "hard work" (without mentioning results?) to justify their argument - right, but it might not mean anything.
Please die hustle culture, you're not that nice to the intrinsic hedonic state of humans. Hopefully we can slowly transition back to a society where people can live freely, which also implies a freedom to actually not think about/have to do work (school) related matters when not out of it (This is why we adopted overtime pay, yet of course students don't get paid.) Please...
When the job metric becomes the goal is when you realize that you barely have personal goals in the first place - business is partially at fault, but unless you fulfill them in your free time, maybe it's slightly you too.
