The idea that being pessimistic makes you more accurate to reality,
and also as a result makes "better" judgments. It suggests mildly
depressed individuals perceive reality more accurately than “normal”
because “normal” is usually a bit more optimistic than reality would
suggest. It is seen as a way for more objective perceptions, but too
much depression can be bad.
I had this view for a long time, possibly due to some random people
claiming "You can do it!" even when doubtful, making me
feel like society
was in an illusion of optimism. It was mainly due to a lack of freedom in the education system, contributing to my sense
that I have little power to change the "dark" reality I perceived, and doubted
for so long. However, I realized that their goal wasn't scientific or
statistical truth! (In fact, daily communication rarely is that
way)
I tried to deny, but eventually realized the obvious: even if logical, it can be bad for your psychology! But, the drawback of depressive realism is that THINKING realistically, e.g., what is likely to happen, might make one avoid venturing into new stuff. EG "The most likely food I can enjoy without drawbacks is just the ones I constantly eat right now." In reality, though this is technically true, you would not be satisfying the brain's novelty-seeking needs.
One technique of depressive realism. Making the self sound really bad, so you might actually be comparatively better. Or it could be socially more acceptable, but sociology may have other things to say about it, like it just being a coping mechanism, and it making you seem weak.
Honestly, this is somewhat true. This helps combat the just-world fallacy to an extent. Well, this is the feeling that you will be screwed. It will completely paralyze you and drive you insane. It will contribute to you learning nothing but helplessness - you know it’s bad, yet you cannot stop it! It impends your doom! Honestly, when there is a power imbalance, there is little way to change. But this is not your fault, according to Stoicism, so it is not your fault, and does not imply a lack of virtue!
If you think strictly deterministically. We are powerless to change what is already going to happen. Yes, basically algorithms, and energy conservation, there is wear, there are existential threats like AI. Many things are good for me, yet every time I fall for things like YouTube. Perhaps this is due to zero-stake activities. Humans, in fact, rarely do deep thinking.
Something I wrote. I think it's quite poetic considering how
imbalanced societal power is, especially for teenagers, who have no say in
votes; they are basically treated like slaves.
My brain has eroded
from prolonged exposure to the education system.
Suddenly, something starts glowing, as if I wanted to tell them
something. The desire quickly subsides as nothing would change even if I voice my opinion.
And suffers through a barrage of a slavery system that I had no say on,
just existing in helplessness. The days pass... And pass... Yet nothing
changes. The hope fades like the fog. I dream every day... that reality
would be better... Yet it doesn't. The dreams, they fade as if they
never happened, like clouds to the horizon... the dreams have
disappeared completely.
